Some homeowner's policies don't cover pet liability

THANK YOU, JOHN. HE OR SHE CAN BE YOUR BEST FRIEND BUT IF YOUR DOG BITES, THAT CAN LAND YOU AND YOUR FAMILY IN BOTH LEGAL AND FINANCIAL TROUBLE. THAT TROUBLE IS TAKING A BITE OUT OF INSURANCE COMPANIES. JENNIFER WAUGH TELLS US, SOME COMPANIES ARE ACTUALLY DENYING COVERAGE TO DOG OWNERS. NO MATTER WHAT KIND YOU HAVE, DOGS ARE COSTING INSURANCE COMPANIES BIG TIME. DOG BITE CLAIMS COST THEM A HALF BILLION DOLLARS AND THAT WAS LAST YEAR ALONE. THAT'S A LOT OF MONEY TO LOSE.

South Yorkshire postmen's plea over dog bites

3. Even if my dog did bite you, you really arenat injured. 4. My dog didnat bite you because I donat have a dog. The fourth version of the Dog Bite defense is certainly an aall-ina move. You had either (1) better be right or (2) have some big kahunas to make that argument to a jury with a straight face. I recently saw a couple of examples of the aDog Bitea defense which caught my eye.

Column: Tips to avoid dog bites

Michael Shakeshaft, director of safety for Royal Mail in the Sheffield area, said: For the first time, we are holding a dog awareness week, working with the Communication Workers Union, animal charities and organisations, to raise awareness of the problems our postmen and women face daily when they are delivering the mail . We are appealing to dog owners in the Sheffield area to work with us to help keep animals under control when the postman calls. We have held a number of one-day campaigns and the awareness of the issue of dog attacks is growing. Last year, across the country, the number of dog attacks on our people fell. However, we need to reduce this further as even one dog attack on our people is one dog attack too many. Clearly most dogs are not inherently dangerous. However, even the most placid animal can be prone to attack if it feels its territory is being threatened. Our first priority as an employer is to ensure the welfare and safety of our people who provide a valuable service to our customers. Dave Joyce, CWU health, safety and environment officer, said: Dog awareness week is an important initiative to raise the profile of dog attacks and the risk family pets and security dogs can pose to postal workers carrying out their everyday duties.

Never approach a dog you don't know Signs that a dog may bite you: Extended neck into a straight line. Hair raised on back. Exposed teeth. Some misjudge this to be smiling. Trust me, they are not smiling.
