Great American Bites: Nathan's hot dogs, the taste of Coney Island

Dog Bite Defense No. 4 And The Defense Of An FCPA Claim

I'm usually in the latter camp, but as crinkle cuts go, these are excellent and hard to stop eating, GREAT AMERICAN BITES: Ben's Chili Bowl delivers true taste of D.C. The rest of the menu is simply adequate, and if nothing else, delivers good value. The fried clams are certainly not the whole belly fresh versions found at New England clam shacks, but they are reasonably tasty, especially for the price. Ditto for the lobster salad roll, with chopped lobster no chunks - and too much celery on a lettuce base. It's not up to Maine standards, but it's still good value. The fried shrimp also taste frozen, but Nathan's does a good job with the deep fryer.

Dog bite victim turns rabid

Of course, this is not the first time that the stray dog menace has come to light in the city. Often reviled for doing precious little to contain the menace, the MC has its own tale of woes to narrate. One is the usual "lack of funds" story that afflicts most government departments, and the other is the overactive lobby of animal rights activists that refuses to let MC workers and officials do their job of sterilizing street dogs. "No funds have been received to date for the sterilization of stray dogs in the city, as the financial committee has still not sanctioned the funds. Moreover, the Animal Welfare Board of the Government of India has still not approved of the method of sterilization," said Amarjeet Singh Sekhon, zonal commissioner, Zone C, MC Ludhiana, who handles the project. All the time while there was an increase in dog bite cases around the city, the MC kept claiming that it has a provision of rupees two crore for the dog sterilization project. But when the present case came to light, the real state of affairs at MC also started coming out in the open. When ToI questioned officials on this case, there was an uncomfortable silence on the other side.

The patient was, meanwhile, referred to Rajindra Hospital in Patiala after he was confirmed to be suffering from rabies. Says Dr Avinash Jindal, specialist physician who treated the patient Gurdiyal Singh at Civil Hospital: "The patient was brought to our hospital yesterday (Friday) in the emergency after he got aggressive. He was first checked by the psychiatrist as he reported of severe aggression symptoms. This morning, while we were checking him, he got more aggressive and started running after people there. He, in fact, bit a 25-year-old patient at the hospital. When I took his history, his attendant told me that he was bitten by a stray dog about 10 days ago.

Wolfsie: 'Dog bites man' less fun when wife's involved

Once Bob and Cathy had convinced my wife that the swelling was either pasteurella multocida or staphylococcus aureus, we headed for the nearest walk-in medical center. At that point, three of us decided to make it a fun evening by socializing in the waiting room while my wife was being examined. I know that's a really dumb way to spend a Saturday night with friends, but with my wife's excellent health insurance, it was actually a cheaper evening than all four of us going to the movies. Before she was treated, Mary Ellen had to fill out a form. The first part was titled "Victim Information." The second section was labeled "If the Victim Was an Animal," which is either the kind of man-bites-dog story I'm always looking for as a reporter, or if it's a dog-bites-dog story, then I want to be there with a news crew when Fido picks up a pen and fills out that form. The receptionist said there was a long line to see the doctor and requested that Mary Ellen put herself on the waiting list and come back in an hour or so. I told the nurse that the next time my wife needed medical attention like this, we'd try to call about 45 minutes before she planned to torment the cat.

Stray dogs make MC bite the dust

I recently saw a couple of examples of the aDog Bitea defense which caught my eye. The first was in an article in the most recent issue of The New Yorker, entitled a Buried Secrets a, by Patrick Radden Keefe. His article discussed the ongoing situation involving the Beny Steinmetz Group Resources Group (BSGR), its mining concession in the country of Guinea and its representative Frederic Cilins, who is in jail in New York, denied bail and awaiting jail for obstruction of justice charges. In an exhaustively reported article, Keefe wrote about his interviews with many of the principal players in this saga including BSRG founder Beny Steinmetz, its representative Cilins and the current President of Guinea, Alpha CondA. As reported in two Financial Times (FT) articles, entitled aContracts link BSGR to alleged bribesa (the amine rights articlea) and aFBI sting says that aagenta sought to have mining contracts destroyeda (the aFBI sting articlea), by the same triumvirate of FT reporters Tom Burgis, Misha Glenny and Cynthia OaMurchu; there are allegations that aThe resources arm of Beny Steinmetz Group agreed to pay $2m to the wife of an African president to help it secure rights to one of the worldas richest untapped mineral deposits, according to documents seen by the Financial Timesa.
