"Those have to be cleaned out very thoroughly, sutured appropriately, make sure there's no other injuries like bone or tendon injuries. Most of those are placed on antibiotics because there's such a high risk of infection," said Dr. Joshua Pacheco, an emergency physician at Albany Medical Center. Pacheco said stopping the bleeding is key, then they flush out the wound with clean water. "Any water that you can drink would be the appropriate way of cleaning that out, and then bandage and cover with an antibiotic ointment," explained Pacheco.
