Port Orange K-9 police dog bites woman

Rabid Dog Bites Five in Bali

While officers searched the house, K-9 Officer Justin White immediately started his K-9 (Rex) on a track of the area in search of the missing child. Residents in neighboring back yards were advised to return to their homes while the K-9 team conducted the search, police say. According to his handler, the K-9 became entangled in loose palm fronds and debris in the water. The more Rex tried to free himself, the more his lead tightened up around his collar, pulling him further into the water. Officer White attempted to lift Rex up and untangle him. As he did so, the lead came off Rex's collar. Rex subsequently jumped from Officer White's grasp. The K-9 ran along the shore, refusing commands to stop. The dog approached a woman who appeared from behind some shrubs and bit her on the thigh. Officer White was able to grab Rex by his collar and subdue the animal. The woman was transported to the hospital for treatment and has been released. The missing child was located unharmed inside his residence where was found tucked up under the dining room table.

The result of the lab test confirmed that the dog that bit five people had rabies, Dewa Raka, the head of Gianyars animal husbandry agency, told the Jakarta Globe on Thursday. The victims were being treated in Sanjiwani hospital in Gianyar on Thursday evening. We will conduct a routine operation, especially in public places such as markets, Raka said. We hope this incident will not affect our efforts to declare Bali rabies-free by 2015. A rabies outbreak beginning in 2008 quickly became an acute health issue in Bali, prompting an island-wide cull and vaccination program of animals to eliminate the virus, which is fatal to humans. In 2012, the Health Ministry said the number of people bitten by animals nationwide was 44,981, with 55 fatalities from rabies. In 2011, 84,010 people were bitten by animals and 184 people died from rabies, including 23 deaths in Bali.
