Panel formed for dog bite victims

Monsoon clouds hover over the Taj Mahal, in Agra on Saturday. The decline in the number of claims and increase in claim costs essentially offset one another so that total costs associated with dog bite claims in 2012 were virtually unchanged, down a mere 0.2 percent in 2012. More than 4.7 million people in the United States are bitten by dogs annually, and nearly 900,000 of those, half of them children, require medical care, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Of those injured, 386,000 require treatment in an emergency department and about 16 die. Article Photos The rate of dog bite-related injuries is highest for children 5 to 9 years old; the rate decreases thereafter. Almost two-thirds of these injuries among children ages 4 years and younger are to the head or neck region. Almost one half of all reported cases of dog bites involve an animal owned by the victim's family or the victim's neighbors.

Must use Union City tragedy to educate public about dog bites

The committee headed by the Commissioner has Chief Health Officer (CHO) as its member secretary. Other members in the panel are the Joint Director of Animal Husbandry Department of the Palike, Chief Accounts Officer (CAO) and the Special Commissioner (Projects). The State government had passed an order in February this year directing all the Deputy Commissioners in the district to form a panel to pay compensation to dog bite victims. This order came in the backdrop of the High Court direction on December 7, 2012 following a series of writ petitions in this regard. The BBMP then submitted a proposal to the State government to allow the BBMP Commissioner to head the committee. The Palike had argued that paying compensation and taking measures to check stray dog population in the City was its obligatory duty.
