Treating dog bites

Barbara Kay: Dog bites man — again and again

Among 98 patients seen with bites over the course of a year, only 63 (64%) were discharged on the appropriate antibiotic, according to Stephanie Fenwick, PharmD, of the Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, and Sarah Rotman, PharmD, of the University of Cincinnati. The latest problem with dogbite is the emergence of MRSA [methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus] bacteria as the most common identifiable cause of skin and soft-tissue infections seen in the emergency department. Treatment of dog bite depends on the type of bacteria the "oral flora" that's in the dog's mouth and the bacteria already on the skin of the bite victim. Amoxicillin-clavulanate is recommended as first-line treatment in most instances, she explained. Treatment may include antibiotics. In the study, only 57% of patients were given amoxicillin-clavulanate monotherapy. The wounds treated in the study included 55 dog bites, 29 human bites, and 13 cat bites.

Your Legal Rights If a Dog Bites You [Video]

Most states make dog owners automatically liable for all dog bites. A few states require the victim to prove the dog was vicious or that the owner violated an animal control law, such as a leash law. If you are the victim of a dog bite, there are several steps you should take: Get medical attention right away.Large dogs can exert more than 450 pounds of pressure per square inch enough to crush bones. Notify animal control and file a police report about the dog that attacked you. Take pictures of the wound to prove the extent of your injury. Check the laws governing dogs. Most cities require a dog to be on a leash, and some states have vicious dog laws. In Ohio and Maryland, for example, pit bulls are considered inherently dangerous and the owners are strictly liable for injuries they cause.

Gazpacho Since 1982, pit bulls have killed 259 of the 511 North American victims of fatal dog attacks In fact, Farmers Group Insurance in California recently stopped liability coverage for pit bulls and Rottweilers (and wolf hybrids). Tellingly, the number of attacks and the amount of payout has doubled in those jurisdictions that like Calgary refuse to enact breed selective legislation. Before the late 20th century proliferation of pit bulls into the dog population, no other breed had ever killed or maimed humans in numbers that come even remotely close to those killed by pit bull type dogs. (Dobermans, widely maligned in their fashionable day as dangerous, have killed four people in the U.S. since 1982.) The exponential growth of pit bull love they currently represent the second most popular breed after retrievers in sales is a worrying cultural phenomenon.
