Stray population 40,000; 35 cases of dog bites daily

Maximum dog bite cases are reported from Kondhwa, Kothrud, Yerawada, Sangamwadi, Bhawani Peth, Bibvewadi and Wanowrie. Three more agencies were appointed for sterilisation and public complaints were decentralised to four zones. These measures have helped in bringing down the number of complaints and increasing the sterilisation figures. As compared to the earlier figure when only 8,000-9,000 dogs of 40,000-odd dog population used to get sterilised yearly bringing it down to about 25 dogs per day, the number now stands at 75 sterilisations daily. PMC has even allocated Rs1 crore in 2013-2014 budget for two more dog pounds where dogs are kept under sterilisation for three days before they are let out," she said. Another positive news is that the number of rabies cases has gone down significantly over the years due to the sterilisation efforts. As compared to 56 rabies cases in 1997, the figure has come down to nearly zero over the past couple of years. On the main complaint from citizens, Sabne said, "According to rules, we have to leave the dogs after sterilisation back into the same area from where they were picked up. This leads to fights as people don't want them but rules are such we are helpless." Dr Suhas Bhokre, vet and volunteer at Society for Protection against Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), said that OPD clinic sees many cases of dog bite from Kondhwa and Bhawani Peth areas.

One of the dogs bit the victim on her hand as she attempted to get them away. She was treated and released from Western Arizona Regional Medical Center with a laceration to her hand. Dog Bites Man, GSA Wastes Money

A report released yesterday by the Office of Audits at the GSA's Office of the Inspector General (OIG) revealed that senior managers within the GSA's Federal Acquisition Service (FAS) improperly intervened in the award of contracts for information technology (IT) services and equipment. In the process, GSA management "undermined the integrity of the procurement process." The OIG audit focused on three 2011 contracts worth a total of more than $900 million to Oracle America, Carahsoft Technology, and Deloitte Consulting, in which the OIG found interference by superiors caused either higher contract prices, less favorable terms for the government, or questionable contract extensions. The results reveal an environment at GSA that appears rife with cronyism, mismanagement, and intimidation. According to the report, GSA contracting officers told the OIG that they "feared for their jobs because they were trying to do the right thing and protect the taxpayers' interests," and that "GSA contractors know they can get whatever they want by going to FAS management." At times, senior GSA officials reportedly engaged in communications with contractors without the knowledge of the employees in charge of negotiations. In one chilling example, GSA directors did not provide proper justification for reassigning a contract with Oracle to a new contracting officer (CO). By way of explanation, the Division Director told the snubbed employee, "Oracle is done with you as a CO." Yesterday's report is yet another indication of an agency out of control. In April, 2012, the GSA OIG famously unearthed an $820,000 conference in Las Vegas in October, 2010 that included a $75,000 bicycle-building exercise, a $1,960 party in the Public Buildings Service Commissioner's suite, and $6,300 for commemorative coins. GSA employees received $30 million in unreported bonuses in 2012.

Owner Will Euthanize Dog After Vicious Dog Bite

"I was just worried about how he was feeling." Alex and his brother older brother Steve love to play with their family dog.  So when the two were walking to a nearby convenience store Sunday, and saw a dog barking at them in a yard, Steve said he weren't too worried, but his brother Alex was. "I said you'll be okay, and he comes over next to me," said Steve.  "Buddy just started lunging, I just figured he wanted to come up, give them a hug and lick them," said the dog owner, Dave Hagar. Hagar said he was sitting on his front porch when the two brothers walked by.  He said his dog, Buddy, a boxer lab mix,  was chained up and was barking loudly at the boys. "We just kept walking," said Steve. Hagar said something in Buddy snapped, and so did the chain holding him back. Buddy ran at the two brothers, biting Alex in his left arm. "I tried to get it off of him so I try to kick him," said Steve.

Dog Bites & Kids

She was suddenly the only child left at home. It broke our hearts when she died and the boys had not gotten a chance to get home to see her.  Thinking we didn't need a dog in a "empty" house was a mistake.  The youngest son felt like he should have a dog (even though he was away at college) and I thought a little dog might be nice.  No way, according to the youngest son, we "are a big dog family", and so we now have 4 year old Maggie, a yellow lab. Sweet, smart and spoiled is all I can say. Now, back to dog bites. I think it is important for children to be around dogs (and other pets as well) but to have a respect for them. Just like we teach children, "stranger danger", the same goes for dogs.
